Creating Personal Freedom With Your Own Business

Freedom: “Liberation from restraint or from the power of another”
Webster’s dictionary

Making the break from employee to self-employed

Why do people leave a company to work for themselves? Most of the clients who I work with as a personal business and life coach say that it’s “freedom” -- not being tied down to someone else’s business fantasy. “After all, if I’m going to work 50 or more hours a week, shouldn’t I be calling the shots?”

Realistically, there are many serious steps to take before making a transition. When I was president of our record label, we compassionately turned down dozens of musicians’ precious recordings, with a nicely written letter to the effect of “don’t quit your day job.” This holds true for almost any job where you are an employee. A plan of action needs to be put into effect before you take the plunge.

Yes, you can make freedom your ultimate choice!

Research and diligence will lead you to your ultimate goal. And perhaps you’ll need more time at your paid job while you’re preparing for your own self-employment.

Making the transition

There are many questions to be answered while making a successful transition.

  • How much money will you need?
  • How can you raise capital?
  • How will you get medical insurance?
  • Do you have the persistence and stamina to follow your dream to completion?
  • Do you have enough money to tide you over for a minimum of one year…and
    possibly longer?
  • Is there a market for your service or product? How big is the market? And where?
  • Can you start your business part time while you’re already working your present job?
  • Do you have the skills and experience necessary to make your idea a success?
  • Do you have help in the areas where you are not the strongest?

These questions, and more, need to be researched and answered before you take the plunge to quit your present employment.

Creating the next steps

  1. Create your business plan. (There are many great books to help with this.)
  2. If finances are needed, contact banks, venture capitalists, friends and family.
  3. Form your own advisory board who will help you brainstorm, keep you focused and give you realistic feedback.
  4. Call experts in the direction, or field, who will help you with their successful ideas.

I remember calling National Biscuit Company for a promotion I was doing at my first international trade show. Eventually, I ended up talking with a senior vice president at the company. He spent one hour giving me invaluable advice. After that irreplaceable hour, I often called “experts”. My lesson was that successful people are more than willing to share advice with beginners, and calling became a crucial part of my business plan. Try it yourself!

Bottom line to create your freedom in work

Gather all the information you need before stepping onto this new path of your journey.

Remember the Boy Scout motto - “Be Prepared”!

I guarantee that you will feel energized and more in control of your own direction when you are primed with the foundational information pertaining to your transition.

If you’re on a personal path to make dramatic changes in your life, know that there is a creative solution to just about everything. It’s not always about making money. Life is about the opportunities that show up daily, allowing us the freedom to make choices that sustain us spiritually, emotionally and physically.

Albert Camus wrote “Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better.”
How will freedom help create your destiny, your true purpose in life?
